Southwark remembers Queen Elizabeth II

Today, people across the country and beyond mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Southwark, as a central London borough, has had the great privilege of hosting the Queen and the Royal Family on a number of occasions, not least for her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977, and again in 2013 to Southwark Cathedral to view the Jubilee Window, then on to the Shard. She will be sadly missed by many in the borough and today both the Mayor and Leaders of Southwark send messages of condolence to her family.
A book of condolence will be available in the atrium of Southwark Council’s offices at 160 Tooley Street for anyone wishing to pay their respects in that way.
Councillor Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “This is a very sad day for our country and for the Royal Family, who are very much in Southwark’s thoughts and prayers. It was a huge honour for our borough when Her Majesty the Queen visited the Shard in 2013; a short but welcome stop on what has been an incredible seventy-year long service to public life and to our country. I would like to extend our borough’s deepest condolences to the royal family at this difficult time.”
Councillor Michael Situ, Deputy Mayor of Southwark, said: "For so many of us The Queen has been the Head of State for our entire lives, she has always represented a sense of duty and fortitude in so many challenges the country has faced, which many of us respect and regard highly. She will be sadly missed by so many, but not least her family – children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to whom I send my sincere condolences on behalf of all in Southwark."
