Black activists, politicians and community leaders are set to be celebrated at a new photographic exhibition this month.
Parasol Creative, in association with The Southwark Black Parents Forum and Southwark Council, are hosting a photographic exhibition for Black History month called ‘A Seat at the Table’.
The exhibition wants to put a spotlight on the historical and active involvement of African and Caribbean communities in political and civic engagement, pre and post the Windrush era.
An opening event will take place at 231 Old Kent Road SE1 5LU, on Saturday 29 October 2022, 12pm to 5pm.
Cllr Natasha Ennin, Deputy Cabinet Member for Diversity, said: “The exhibition is a reminder that diverse communities have historically contributed much to politics in the United Kingdom.
“With 2022 being the 35th Anniversary of the 1987 Black Sections vote. This exhibition will give special attention to the activists and politicians who historically chose (and currently choose) to use the richness of their heritage as a source of inspiration and power, attempting to bring about balance and positive changes for the communities they serve and represent, despite the cards stacked against them.”
The event will also launch Southwark Council’s commitment to develop a Civic Leadership programme. This programme forms as a part of the council’s ongoing dedication to the tackling of racism and inequality through activities, that supports and enables our Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to play an active role in the civic life of Southwark.
