New swimming pool takes shape in Canada Water

1 June 2022

Major work to build a new leisure centre at Canada Water is coming along at pace, with the foundations of the new pool hall being laid.

Southwark Council and British Land are working in partnership to deliver a new town centre at Canada Water. The new state-of-the-art leisure centre is part of plans to deliver up to 3,000 new net zero homes, office space for an estimated 20,000 workers, and 12 acres of new parks and squares. Up to one million sq ft will be occupied by shops, restaurants, entertainment, education and community space.

The new public leisure centre will open to residents in early 2025. Facilities will include:

  • an 8-lane 25m swimming pool
  • learner pool
  • 150-station gym
  • three studios
  • a 4-court sports hall

Cllr Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure said: “I’m really excited to see how well the pool of the new Canada Water leisure centre is progressing. Residents of all ages can look forward to enjoying the new state-of-the-art centre. We’ve committed to bring all our leisure services in-house to enable us to continue supporting many more people to live healthier lives. This will include the brand new leisure centre at Canada Water.’

“We are investing in thriving neighbourhoods where people have all the essentials of life close to home, including great fitness and sports facilities. At Canada Water, our vision is becoming a reality to create a vibrant town centre with something for everyone. From thousands of new homes, particularly hundreds of much-needed social rent homes, to new shops, offices, open spaces and of course, the brand new public leisure centre.”

Emma Cariaga, Joint Head of Canada Water Development, British Land, said: “The new leisure centre we are building for Southwark Council will offer a wide range of activities for people who live and spend time in the area. The learner pool will even have a moveable floor to make it suitable for all ages and abilities.

“We’re committed to ensuring that our development supports active and healthy lifestyles both by providing new public spaces, and by supporting access to leisure and recreational facilities that everyone can enjoy. We’re really excited to bring forward this modern facility to support the evolving health and wellbeing offer here at Canada Water.”
