Keep Britain Tidy gives 30 Green Flag Awards to Southwark parks

27 July 2022

Southwark Council received 30 Green Flag Awards for its parks and open spaces. Southwark has the third most awards of all of the 2,208 councils that took part across England and the second most in London.

The scheme, managed by environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy, sets the benchmark for the management of green spaces across the UK, and around the world.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Parks, Streets and Clean Air, said: “We are proud to have the second most Green Flag accredited parks of any London council and joint third highest of any local authority in England.

“Southwark is an Inner London borough, meaning that households have fewer gardens and our parks are used by many more people, than other leafier boroughs. Making this achievement extra remarkable.

“It is thanks to the people of Southwark that we continue the important work of maintaining and improving beautiful, accessible parks and green spaces; offering a range of community facilities and high standards of care. I’d like to thank our parks team, our contractor, Idverde, the many Friends Groups, and others who are invested in making Southwark’s parks some of the best in the country.”

Commenting on the news that Southwark Council has met the Green Flag Award standard, Keep Britain Tidy’s Accreditation Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making all of these sites worthy of a Green Flag Award.”

The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy, under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
