Congratulations to Southwark’s GCSE class of 2022
26 August 2022
Southwark’s GSCE students look set to be celebrating a year of excellent results with provisional figures showing improvement in exam performance across all measures.
This is the first summer GSCE students have sat exams in three years due to the pandemic. For the previous two years, teachers awarded grades to students based on their assessment of mock exams, homework, coursework or mini-exams, another form of test.
As results come in from schools across the borough, early indications show that there were improvements in performance across the whole suite of GCSE measures compared to 2019, particularly for students achieving a strong pass compared to a standard pass. Attainment 8, the measure of achievement across eight qualifications including English and maths, has gone up by 6.3 points from 49.5 points in 2019 to 55.8 points this year.
Today’s early results showed that 78.0 per cent of Southwark students achieved a standard pass (up 11.7 percentage points from 66.3 per cent in 2019) and 62.1 per cent achieved a strong pass (up 16.6 percentage points from 2019) in both English and mathematics.
Early indications suggest results for the English Baccalaureate have also improved: 49.5 per cent of pupils achieved a standard pass (up 11.9 percentage points from 37.6 per cent in 2019) and 38.7 per cent of pupils achieved a strong pass (up 14.4 percentage points from 24.3 per cent in 2019)
Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “A massive well done to our GCSE students! You should all be really proud of what you have achieved. Despite all the disruption to your learning, your hard work and that of your school staff has resulted in grade improvements across the board compared to last time exams were sat. I couldn’t be prouder to see you flourish in the face of all the challenges since the pandemic started.
