17 new council homes completed in Camberwell Green

Building works are now complete on 17 new council homes in Goschen Estate, Camberwell Green. Southwark Council built the 17 new council flats across a four and five-storey block, as well as providing a playground and a new garden in the outside communal area of the estate.
The Leader of Southwark Council, Councillor Kieron Williams, said, “I’m delighted to see these new flats completed and ready to open doors to residents. Having seen their high quality, I know they’ll make fantastic homes for the families who move in, and I am delighted that we’ve named them after two remarkable Southwark Citizens who made valuable contributions to our heritage and sense of community.”
Southwark Council built nine flats in the block towards the north of the estate, which has been named Prout House, and eight flats in the south block, which has been named Harold Moody Court.
The two areas of the estate were originally underused spaces occupied by garages, old storerooms and pramsheds.
Prout House was named after Samuel Prout, a British watercolourist who painted ‘View of Southwark Bridge’ in the 19th century. Harold Moody Court was named after Harold Moody, a Jamaican-born physician who lived locally and campaigned against racial prejudice. Harold Moody established the League of Coloured Peoples in 1931 with the support of the Quakers.
Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member of Council Homes and Homelessness, Councillor Darren Merrill, said, “These incredible new council homes have been carefully designed to meet the needs of local residents with spacious, high-quality designs that are in keeping with the rest of the estate. The new blocks make excellent use of previously under-used space and preserve the local character and communal outside areas. I’m proud to be providing these much-needed new homes for our residents”.
In line with Southwark Council’s local lettings policy, at least 50 per cent of the new homes have been offered to local tenants already living in Goschen Estate. The remaining homes will be allocated to others on the council’s wider housing waiting list.
