Southwark Council’s plans to build 22 new council homes in Lomond Grove in Camberwell Green have been given the go-ahead after being approved by Southwark’s Planning Committee on Wednesday 29 September 2021.
Southwark Council has one of the most ambitious council homes building programmes in London, aiming to deliver or start construction on 2,500 new council homes by May 2022. In line with the council’s local lettings policy, at least 50% of the new homes will be offered to local tenants in housing need who live in the immediate area. The remaining homes will be allocated to others on the council’s housing waiting list.
The Lomond Grove development will see extensive landscaping improvements being made to the area, including refurbishing an existing play area and replanting 61 trees. The building will be heated by air source heat humps, a low carbon, energy efficient heating system. The council will also provide new bin stores in front of the adjacent blocks as requested by local ward councillors.
Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said: “I’m delighted that this development now has planning approval and will provide much-needed new affordable housing for local people. This development will transform an overgrown, derelict area that is inaccessible to the public and create something that will be a real asset for the local community. Every new housing development that we provide will bring real positive change to the lives of Southwark residents.”
Building works are expected to start at Lomond Grove in spring 2022 and should be completed by early 2024.
