Planning permission approved for 58 new council homes in Southwark

Southwark Council’s Planning Committee approved applications to build 52 new council homes across five different sites on Tuesday 16 November 2021. The council also made a delegated decision to approve an additional six new council homes on Monday 15 November 2021.

The plans are to build eight new council homes at Kingston Estate in north Walworth, eight on Fenwick Road in Rye Lane, eight at Pynfolds Estate in north Bermondsey, 21 at Woodland Road Estate in Dulwich Wood and seven at Longfield Estate in south Bermondsey. The additional six new council homes will be built on the site of an old hostel at 17-19 Wood Vale in Dulwich. Southwark Council will be working closely with current residents in these areas to create the designs of the new homes and enhance the surroundings of their estates.

Southwark Council has one of the most ambitious council homes building programmes in London, aiming to deliver or start construction on 2,500 new council homes by May 2022.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said, “I’m thrilled that another round of planning applications for new council homes has been successful, meaning that we can provide the truly affordable housing our residents need and deserve. These new developments will be accompanied by improvements we will make to the existing estates and surrounding areas, enhancing the lives of existing residents as well as those who move into a new home.”

In line with the council’s local lettings policy, at least 50 per cent of the new homes will be offered to local tenants in housing need who live in the immediate area. The remaining homes will be allocated to others on the council’s housing waiting list. Southwark Council recently held a consultation on a new local lettings policy, which could mean that up to 100 per cent of new homes are allocated to local residents in future.

Construction works on these developments are expected to start in spring/summer 2022, with the aim of completing in 2023.
