18 new council homes set to go ahead in Bermondsey
24 November 2021
Southwark Council approved plans to build 18 new council homes at Slippers Estate in north Bermondsey on Monday 22 November 2021. The council will build 18 new flats in an area of the estate which is currently taken up by a car park and pram sheds. As part of the new development, the council will also carry out landscaping works to the outside areas and build new bike stores for all residents on the estate.
The new flats will be a range of one, two and three-bedroom units, all of which will be let at council rent levels. In line with the council’s local lettings policy, at least 50 per cent of the new homes will be offered to existing local tenants in housing need who are already living in the immediate area. This will mean that they can stay close to family, friends and the services they already use. The remaining homes will be allocated to others on Southwark Council’s wider housing waiting list. The council recently consulted with residents about a new local lettings policy, which could mean that up to 100 per cent of new homes are allocated to local residents in future.
Southwark Council has one of the most ambitious council homes building programmes in London, aiming to start or deliver 2,500 new council homes by May 2022.
Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said, “I’m thrilled that the plans for Slippers Estate have been approved and we can now forge ahead with building desperately-needed new council homes here. With more than 16,000 households living in housing need in our borough, it is our responsibility to provide as many new council homes as we can, and tackle this housing crisis locally, one step at a time”.
Works are expected to start on site at Slippers Estate in spring 2022 and complete in autumn 2023.
