56 new homes to be built on ex-school site in Bermondsey

13 May 2021

Over 50 new homes, including 26 new council homes, are set to be built on the site of the old Cherry Gardens school in Bermondsey, after Southwark Council signed a development agreement with Higgins Homes.

The new state-of-the-art Cherry Gardens School opened in Peckham in 2019, leaving its old site vacant.

The new council homes will be made of up one, two and three-bedroom homes, and will also include six wheelchair accessible homes. Thirteen local council tenants and their families who need to move to a new home will be eligible to apply for these homes under the council’s local lettings policy. Planning permission has also been issued for the site.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Housing, said, “I’m thrilled that we are partnering with Higgins Homes to provide much-needed new homes for people in Bermondsey. This varied development will cater to a range of needs and will allow a significant number of local council tenants on our housing register to move into a brand new home.”

Will Higgins, Land Director at Higgins Homes, said, “Higgins Homes are delighted to be working in partnership with Southwark Council to revitalise the former Cherry Garden School site. We will be delivering a quality development that includes much-needed affordable homes for the local community and we very much look forward to progressing on site now that the planning permission has been issued.

The development is due to start in site in summer 2021 and is estimated to complete in summer 2023.
