Celebrations in Camberwell as new council blocks reach roof level

11 August 2021

Southwark councillors, building contractors and residents held a topping out ceremony at Goschen Estate in Camberwell on Monday 9 August 2021 to mark the occasion of building works reaching the roof level at two five-storey council blocks on the estate. These two blocks will provide 17 new council homes for Southwark residents along with landscaping improvements and redevelopment of the old storerooms.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark’s Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, attended the topping out ceremony and unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion alongside Councillor Dixon-Fyle MBE, ward councillor for Camberwell Green. Andy Higson, a local Camberwell resident, also attended the ceremony and a tour of the site.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan said “I’m extremely proud to celebrate the progress made on these two new council blocks which will provide desperately-needed new council homes for people in the area. These new homes are enviably located, spacious and high-quality. We know that there is an acute shortage of affordable housing in the area and these new flats will be welcomed by the local community.”

Stephen Jelley, Managing Director of Guildmore building contractors who are delivering the development, said “Guildmore are always left with a sense of pride in being an integral part to the growth of the community in which we work. We pride ourselves on collaboration and working in partnership to ensure we provide good quality living situations for the ones that need it most. We are proud to keep building futures, today, tomorrow and always.”

Southwark Council is committed to one of the most ambitious council house building programmes in London, aiming to deliver 2,500 new council homes by May 2022. The council works closely with residents to shape the delivery of new council homes, from site identification through to consultation, design, planning, and delivery.

The building works at Goschen Estate are expected to complete in early 2022.
