Urgent information: London to move to Level 2

15 October 2020

From Saturday 17 October, the whole of London will be subject to local alert level 2 (High) restrictions, which means residents must all follow additional rules to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Councillor Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “This is a critical moment for our borough.  Despite the efforts of everyone in our community, the infection rate is rising rapidly, and hospital and ICU admissions in London are rising too. We all need to act now to help save lives. The new rule is clear – please only socialise indoors with people you either live with, or who are part of your support bubble. And continue to follow the other Government guidelines too, including reducing the number of journeys you make where possible. If we all play our part now we can save lives and reduce the chance of a need for a full lock down later in the year, protecting jobs too.

“I know this is not easy. We will continue to offer support to those how are hardest hit through our Community hub and Southwark Emergency Support Service.  I am also calling on the Government to come forward with more financial support for affected businesses and for people who are struggling to get by.

“I am immensely proud of the people of Southwark and of our local businesses for doing their best to adapt to an ever-changing situation, playing your part by following the new rules as they happen, and trying your best to stop the spread of the virus. I urge everyone to continue to do this, with our full support. Only by working together can we protect our families, friends and communities.”

The main new rule that affects everyone is:

  • You must not socialise with anybody who is not part of your household or support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place. This will include for businesses like pubs and restaurants.

The new measures are in addition to the national rules and guidance so please do continue to:

  1. Keep your distance
  2. Wash your hand
  3. Wear a face covering
  4. Self-isolate if you have symptoms while you arrange a test, or if you are advised to because you have been near to someone else who has tested positive
  5. Remember the rule of six outdoors, in public places and private gardens

For those who are worried about the impact of the new restrictions, or about self-isolating, there is support available. This could be a practical concern like how to get shopping, a mental health issue like being alone, or how it will affect personal finances – the council can help. The Community Hub is still available to offer advice and support.
