Southwark Council supports Millwall FC players taking a knee in protest against racism

On Saturday (5 December) Millwall FC players took a knee in support of the fight against racism before kick-off at Millwall vs Derby at The Den. Some of the fans loudly booed the gesture which has been adopted in English football since protestors at Black Lives Matter demonstrations from across the world took the knee in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

Cllr Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for communities and equalities, said: “We fully back the Millwall FC players taking the knee and taking a stance against racism. It beggars belief that anyone would boo them – what we saw from some fans at the weekend was truly appalling and must not be tolerated.

“We welcome the Club’s statement that it will be meeting with Kick It Out and other bodies to find the short and long-term solutions which are urgently needed.

“We all have a duty to continue to fight racism and discrimination wherever we find it, working together to root out racism in all its guises.”
