Ruby Triangle receives Secretary of State approval to clear final planning hurdle

The Ruby Triangle scheme in Old Kent Road has now passed the final stage of planning approval including receiving Secretary of State approval and the signing of the Section 106 agreement.
Ruby Triangle which will be built on a wedge of land between Sandgate Street, Verney Road and Old Kent Road itself, is a joint venture between A2 Dominion Housing Association and property developer Avanton. It comprises 1,152 apartments of 1-3 bedrooms, of which at least 40 per cent will be affordable homes.
It will also deliver a new sports hall as well as business space, additional commercial and retail uses, a tach incubator hub, cycle hub and a public park.
The council resolved to grant planning permission for the scheme last October and with approval from the Mayor of London and the Section 106 agreement signed, the scheme could start on site by the end of 2019. The project is expected to take 5 years to complete although residents should be able to move into the first phase by the end of 2021.
Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for growth, development and planning at Southwark Council commented: “The vision for the Old Kent Road is to build on its unique creative character, a place where industry can thrive alongside new homes and quality open spaces. Delivering on our commitment to the households on our housing waiting list with an additional 5000 new socially rented homes planned for the area.
“The Ruby Triangle scheme represents a significant step in delivering on that ambition with more than 1,000 homes to be built on site, this one scheme alone represents over 250 new socially rented homes towards our target to build 5000 across the Old Kent Road area and contributing to 40 per cent genuinely affordable homes on this site. With a new park, children’s play area and sports hall thrown into the bargain, I look forward to visiting as soon as work gets under-way ”.
Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, said: “This is a hugely exciting scheme that will deliver much needed new homes and jobs, together with community facilities on Old Kent Road as the Mayor and Southwark Council work together to regenerate this part of the capital. I am pleased that this scheme will deliver a significant amount of genuinely affordable homes, including many at social rented levels.”
