School Streets road closure for children at Robert Browning Primary

Southwark Council today launched a new road closure outside Robert Browning Primary School, as part of its new School Streets campaign.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, joined head teacher, Sarah Manley, and children, staff and parents from the school, to celebrate.

Morecambe Street will be closed at drop off (8:30 to 9:30) and pick up (15:00 to 16:00) times, on school days. This trial closure will be in place for three months, during which time engagement work with those affected and other testing will take place.

The council has awarded the school gold accreditation for its work tackling road safety and its efforts to encourage staff, parents and children to walk, cycle and use scooters to get to and from school, where possible. It is hoped that the closure will gain full support and be introduced on a more permanent basis.

Cllr Richard Livingstone said: “Our council is passionate about improving air quality in Southwark and this School Streets road closure will help us to reduce air pollution, improve health and increase safety and physical activity for children here at Robert Browning Primary School.

“We want this School Streets road closure to encourage more schools, families and residents across Southwark to work with us to reduce traffic and encourage more parents and pupils to cycle and walk to school.”

Sarah Manley, Head teacher, said: “The main entrance for children and parents is located on Morecambe Street, this is a narrow road that can be very busy, due to its proximity to East Street Market. We hope that the road closure will help to make our street safer. We also hope that it will encourage healthier habits, with more children walking, scooting and cycling to school. Parents have already welcomed the scheme and we look forward to seeing the impact of it."
