Council further prepares for Brexit

Three weeks after Southwark Council announced a £2m Brexit budget reserve and an immediate £300,000 funding package, the local authority has created a new online information resource to help residents with any concerns or questions they have about the UK’s withdrawal from the EU on 29 March.
The new guidance for EU citizens offers advice on the settlement scheme and signposts people to places where they can get more information, support and advice.
As well as this, it has made its risk register public in order to reassure residents that different eventualities are being planned for as much as possible. The register will be a ‘live’ document that will change and adapt in line with the continued uncertainty in the government’s negotiating position. The council has already, this year, set up a panel to hear from different sectors which could potentially be affected by Brexit, in order to plan and budget.
Councillor Victoria Mills, Cabinet member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “It’s a very worrying time for everyone, and especially EU citizens, so I hope that we can help in a small way by offering some reassurance and practical support and advice. We don't know what will happen after 29 March, but we continue to make every preparation we can in order to ensure continuity of services and support for staff.”
