Southwark students celebrate GCSE results

Cllr Jasmine Ali joined students, staff and parents at Bacon’s College to celebrate GCSE results day 2019.

Bacon’s College in Rotherhithe achieved a strong set of results with many students achieving multiple grade 9s, the top grade created to recognise the achievements of the very highest performing students.

A special well done to the following Bacon’s students for an impressive set of results:

• Nastasia Sadowski who achieved seven grade 9s, two grade 8s and an A* in GCSE Further Maths
• Marci Talbot who picked up eight grade 9s, two grade 8s and an A* in GCSE Further Maths
• Miracle Kalonga who earned five grade 9s, two grade 8s, two grade 7s and an A* in GCSE Further Maths

In Camberwell Sacred Heart Catholic School 80 percent of pupils achieved a standard pass in both English and Maths while 52 percent achieved a strong pass in both subjects.

A special mention to the following Sacred Heart students for their achievements:

• Holly Agbukor  who achieved six grade 9s and four grade 8s
• Rachel Daramola for her five grade 9s and five grade 8s
• Vanessa Gagno who picked up five grade 9s, four grade 8s and one grade 7

Over in Bermondsey, Compass School Southwark 57 percent of pupils achieved the grade 9-4 benchmark in English and Mathematics and 30 percent achieved grade 5 and above. Further, 61 percent achieved 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, while 41 percent achieved 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above.

Special congratulations to Compass’ two top performers:

• Laila Dehiles who achieved 2 grade 9s and 3 grade 8s amongst her set of 10 GCSEs that all scored grades 7-9
• Andrews Agyei closely matched her performance with 2 grade 9s and 3 grade 8s among his 10 qualifications.

Across the borough as a whole todays results show that 65.4  percent of Southwark students achieved grades 9-4 for English and mathematics combined.

Provisional results indicate that 44.4 percent of pupils achieved a strong pass of grades 9 to 5 in English and mathematics. 

Early indications suggest results for the English Baccalaureate have also once again improved, 37.7 percent of pupils achieved grades 9-4.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care said: “It was fantastic to share the success of results day with students from Bacon’s College today. Hearing them cheer and celebrate with their friends was a real joy to behold. Results day is a nerve wracking time and on behalf of Southwark Council I want to say well done to everyone for the work they have put in to achieve their grades.

“In Southwark we have truly great schools that are delivering the best start in life for our young people. I hope that today’s results are the stepping stone each young person needs to continue on whatever path is right for them, I want to wish them every success for the future.”

Bacon’s College Principal, James Wilson said: “We are really pleased, the kids have done really well. Obviously the school has had its challenges in recent years but this really cements the fact that we’re over that and we’ve got a really strong set of results and progress is up across the school. The kids should be really proud. We’re really pleased with where the school is going, there’s a really good atmosphere and a real sense the school has made good progress.”

Sacred Heart Headteacher, Serge Cefai said: “The last few years have seen lots of changes in the educational landscape, with GCSEs moving from A*-G to 9-1. These latest results confirm that all the hard work we have put in as a school continues to bear fruit, with pupils achieving another set of fantastic results. Congratulations to all our staff and pupils. I am sure that when national progress 8 results are confirmed we will once again rank among the top schools in the country.”

Compass Principal, Marcus Huntley, said: “I am delighted that the hard work by both students and staff has paid off with a great set of results. The rapid improvements we have seen are set to continue as we strive with renewed enthusiasm to build an outstanding learning community at Compass School.

“We pride ourselves in our unique offer as a small secondary school with smaller than average class sizes, and the fantastic results we have seen are a real sign of our commitment and ongoing development.”
