St George’s Church of England Primary School has gone extra mile to improve teaching and pupil outcomes

When Ofsted visited St George's CoE Primary School they found significant improvements since its last inspection in 2017 and rated the school as ‘Good’ in every area of their inspection.
The Camberwell school has seen the proportion of children who reach a good level of development continue to rise. Key stage one pupils were found to be making increasingly good progress and phonics teaching was particularly effective. Inspectors found that even the youngest children could use phonics well when trying to spell new words.
Inspectors also praised the creativity of teachers for making demanding lessons engaging for their pupils, the report highlighted “The imaginative tasks planned by teachers make strong links across subjects to strengthen pupils’ learning. For example, when learning how to use apostrophes, pupils wrote about the properties of leaves from different trees.”
St George’s pupils told inspectors that they felt safe in school. Pupils said there was no bullying at St George’s because they all respect each other; the report also noted that “Kindness is important to pupils. They insist no one would ever be lonely in the playground because others would always look after them.”
The diversity and inclusivity of St George’s curriculum was also remarked upon with inspectors stating that, “the curriculum offers plenty of opportunities to challenge stereotypes. For example, during science week, pupils learned about female and minority ethnic scientists and wrote about their lives in great detail.”
The report also highlighted the school’s focus on art and music, noting how the local authority music provision worked well within the school. Inspectors also noted “Through this high-calibre teaching, pupils will be more than ready to play at the Royal Festival Hall later in the year.”
