Grotty garages set to be transformed into 21st Century co-working space

Crumbling garages in Camberwell look set to be turned into a thriving, affordable office space for small and start up businesses.
After speaking to local people, Originate Architects are preparing to submit a planning application to transform the unused and dilapidated underground Redcar garages into a new co-working space in Camberwell.

At the same time the podium areas are going to be transformed after repairing surfaces to improve the look of the open space and make it a safer and more inviting area for local people to enjoy.

The project hopes to attract a variety of young professionals and creatives, and aims to help meet the rise in demand for co-working developments.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “In Southwark we are always looking for innovative ways to create affordable, practical working space for smaller and new businesses. This project will help transform these disused and unsightly garages into a modern and attractive space for local residents and businesses as well as breathing new life into the area.”

The car park, built at the same time as the surrounding 1960’s tower blocks in the Wyndham and Comber Estate, has been unused for over 20 years. The proposal will bring the space back to life, keeping all the existing structure, and adding selective new materials to soften the concrete, such as polycarbonate and timber.

The scheme will provide 2000 square metres of office space, including a reception, a mixture of open desk space and private offices, meeting rooms and bike storage. A new timber stair will provide access to the roof deck, a vast public space with new seating and greenery.
