East Dulwich school one step closer to completion

Following the completion of the concrete frame of the school back in February 2018 and construction starting on the healthcare centre, the site has reached another construction milestone.

The Charter School East Dulwich has celebrated the next phase of construction with the latest topping out ceremony marking the completion of the brickwork for the school. There were glimpses of some of the new classrooms which are nearing completion with good quality design to support teaching and learning.

Construction on the Charter School East Dulwich started in 2017 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year with the school moving into its permanent site in January 2019.

When the school is completed, it will continue to grow be able to eventually accommodate 1,200 students in eight forms of entry, across each year group in years 7 to 11. The new school will also have sixth form provision.

Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Growth, Development and Planning was joined by ward councillors Margy Newens, Victoria Olisa, Andy Simmons, former Mayor Cllr Charlie Smith, Mayor of Southwark Cllr Catherine Rose and Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes in attending the most recent celebration.

The school will also share its site with a new healthcare centre which also celebrated breaking ground. The centre is expected to be completed in spring 2020 and welcoming its first patients through the doors shortly after.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Growth, Development and Planning said: “Today marks a major milestone in the development of this long standing and ambitious project for the council. It represents a major investment to create a brand new secondary school that will serve East Dulwich, South Camberwell and Peckham as well as a brand new healthcare centre. Southwark continues to invest in education and will look forward to developing other successful partnerships for our local communities. I am sure both the school and the healthcare centre will be a major asset to the local community.”

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Adults said: “I know that many local parents are eagerly anticipating the completion of the school as construction reaches its latest phase. As a council we are committed to ensuring that every child in the borough gets the best start in life and quality education is central to this. The Charter School East Dulwich is just the latest example of our commitment to investment in education and will deliver much needed school places. It is wonderful to see the school taking shape and I look forward to visiting again to see pupils enjoying their fantastic new school.”

John Godfrey, Vice Chair of Governors at the Charter School East Dulwich and premises lead added: “Our entire community is delighted to have reached this latest milestone on our programme. It stands as a great testament to the close collaboration between the school, Southwark Council and the NHS, alongside the relentless efforts of our constructor Kier and funding agency ESFA. Our students, their families, and the wider community are incredibly proud of the school we are developing and excited to be moving into our wonderful new facilities in January 2019.”
