Local children celebrated the Chinese Year of the dog at the council’s hugely popular Canada Water Library on 14 February.
Library staff were joined by a team from Snowflake Books and master storyteller, Vanessa Woolf, who entertained everyone with a famous Year of the Dog story: New Year Beast and the Dragon Princess.
The children received lucky red envelopes, learned to say Happy New Year and other greetings in Mandarin and joined in with a Dragon Dance. They also coloured in their own zodiac animals, and made animal face masks and lanterns.
Dulwich, Peckham, Camberwell and John Harvard libraries also hosted similar celebrations throughout the week.
Cllr Johnson Situ , Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Social Regeneration, said: “I am delighted that so many local children were able to join and our excellent libraries team, to learn about Chinese culture and celebrate the Chinese New Year.”
