Our approach to building
Southwark is a small, densely-populated borough, and there has been significant opposition to large-scale regeneration projects that deliver the greatest number of new homes. To meet this challenge, we’re looking at new and innovative ways to build more council homes. As well as delivering traditionally tendered new build schemes, some of the ways we’re building include:
- creating new homes on existing estates, as part of other developers’ schemes, and by converting garages and disused areas
- delivering new homes as part of major refurbishment works, which can offer better value
- buying homes developed by others
- buying land where there is potential to deliver new council homes
We work with our residents to shape the way we deliver new council homes, from site identification through to consultation, design, planning, and delivery. Our residents help us design the look and feel of new homes and amenities that help make their communities stronger, safer, and more rewarding places to live.
