Respiratory conditions
Respiratory conditions include respiratory infections and diseases of the respiratory tract, excluding neoplasms. Respiratory conditions are the third largest cause of death in Southwark accounting for 152 deaths in 2015 alone. Over half of these deaths were caused by bronchitis, emphysema or other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The 2015 to 2016 Quality and Outcomes Framework (QoF) data for Southwark show that 4,430 general practice patients have been diagnosed with COPD. Smoking is the main cause of COPD and therefore the burden of this disease could be prevented through effective smoking cessation initiatives.
The rates of premature mortality from COPD which is considered preventable are significantly higher in Southwark compared to London and England averages: 23.1 versus 16.5 and 18.3 per 100,000 population respectively. In addition, there is a significant gender gap in preventable mortality from COPD, whereby Southwark male mortality rates are more than double compared to female rates.
