Cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the second largest cause of death in Southwark, accounting for around a quarter of all deaths in 2015. Ischemic heart disease accounted for around four in 10 of all CVD deaths, with stroke accounting for two in every 10 CVD deaths.
Lifestyle risk factors like smoking, excess weight, alcohol, poor diet and physical inactivity can significantly increase the risk of acquiring a cardiovascular condition. Reducing these risk factors in the population can improve life expectancy and healthy life expectancy (PDF, 650kb) as well as reduce the risk of premature mortality.
In Southwark, the rates of premature mortality from cardiovascular disease which is considered preventable have reduced significantly over the past ten years. Mortality rates are now similar to England and London averages; however, significant gender inequalities exist. Male rates of premature mortality from cardiovascular diseases in Southwark are nearly three times as high as female rates.
Southwark Public Health together with key partners and stakeholders have produced a number of documents identifying the local population needs. Please note that this list will be updated as and when the new information becomes available.
