Description

Be among the first to join!

In the new year (2025) we’ll be launching a new book group for adults, focused on classic books - both ancient and modern.

We will be taking inspiration from a list first published in 2002, called ‘1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die’.
Everything we read will be from that iconic list.
If you’d like to join in, all you need to do is pick up a copy of our first book - ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ by Mohsin Hamid, have a go at reading it, and join us for the discussion at Dulwich Library on Tuesday 7 January from 2pm.

If Tuesday afternoons don’t work for you, there will be another chance to talk about the book at Southwark Libraries Online Reading Group, from 6.30pm on Thursday 16 January.

To join the mailing list for either the in-person or online meetings, just email wes.white@southwark.gov.uk

Where can you get a copy?

We’ll have copies at Dulwich Library on a first-come, first served basis. Just pop in and pick one up. You don’t have to issue it to your own library card – just please return it to any Southwark library when you’ve finished with it. That way we can get copies to as many readers as possible.

There are also eBook and Audio copies on the BorrowBox app and at southwark.borrowbox.com, which you can reserve for free with your library membership.

If you use the Home Library Service we may be able to get a copy to you that way too – just ask.

What if I don’t feel confident talking about books?

Don’t worry! We want this to be a friendly group and reading is for everyone. You don’t have to love the book or bring an essay about it along – we just want to know what the book makes you think and feel. Even if you don’t finish it, it would still be great to know your thoughts – as long as you don’t mind spoilers…

What about Dulwich Library's current evening book group?
Our very successful existing book group, which meets on the last Thursday evening of the month, is still ongoing with its own reading program and is not affected by this new group. For more details on that group, contact: Dulwich.Library@southwark.gov.uk
