Transforming services for families
Southwark Troubled Families Programme
The government provides funding to local authorities through the Troubled Families programme. The 5-year programme (2015-20), allows Southwark to work with and receive funding for 3340 families over the lifetime of the programme.
The programme incentivise local authorities and their partners to take a multi-agency approach to develop new ways of working with families to:
- improve outcomes for the children, young people and their families
- reduce costs for the agencies to support future service delivery
In Southwark we use this funding to deliver services to families, investing in and improving existing services. Focusing on transformation of services across the council to ensure that families receive the help they need, when they need it.
We know that families are often trying to deal with more than one problem at a time. This can make it difficult for families to get the right help and support. Although each family is different, many have issues relating to:
- crime and anti-social behaviour
- education, children not in school
- worklessness, adults on out-of-work benefits
- young people not in employment, education of training
- problems with drugs and/or alcohol
- physical or mental health problems
- domestic violence and abuse
- families at risk of homelessness or unmanaged debts
- young children failing to thrive
- unhealthy weight and/or malnutrition concerns
We've developed an outcomes plan (PDF, 481kb) that sets out the eligibility criteria for attachment to the programme and what we mean by ‘improved outcomes’ in Southwark.
