Nurseries

Nurseries in Southwark provide care, play and education for children aged under 5 years of age. There are different types of nurseries: private, voluntary, community, independent or local authority. Most offer part-time places through to full-time places (eg Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).

All nurseries have to be registered with the Ofsted and are subject to regular inspections. If they're registered to provide early education for 3 and 4 year old they will also have to undergo further Ofsted inspections to show that they're following the foundation stage curriculum working towards the Early Learning Goals.

You should always visit more than one nursery and look at the facilities and activities on offer. If possible talk to other parents at the nursery for their views. There is often a heavy demand for full-time places and places for babies and younger children. You may not always be able to get a place in the nursery of your choice.
