Nurseries

Benefits and early learning goals

If your child is three or four years of age and using a free part-time pre-school or early education place, staff will make sure your child is able to work towards the early learning goals to ensure they're well prepared for school.

These include learning about numbers, learning about reading and writing and learning to take care of him or herself so that by the time they are nearly six years of age and are entering Year one they have basic skills such as being able to count to ten and knowing the alphabet.

Benefits of nurseries are:

  • your child can enjoy learning and playing in a small group
  • your child can acquire skills for a good start at school
  • as nurseries are registered with Ofsted you may be eligible for help towards your childcare costs through the Working Tax Credit system
