Hazardous waste

This is waste that contains substances or properties that might make it harmful to human health or the environment. For that reason, it must be disposed of separately from non-hazardous waste.

Asbestos and chemicals

The City of London's hazardous waste collection service will collect a small amount of asbestos cement or chemicals from your home, provided they are packaged and ready for collection. Residents are entitled to one free asbestos collection amounting to 15m² of individually wrapped pieces (seven builders' rubble bags worth of asbestos material) and three chemical waste collections per year.

Other hazardous waste

The following hazardous items can be safely disposed of at the reuse and recycling centre:

car batteries and household batteries
computers and related equipment
engine oil and central heating oil
mobile phones
pesticides
TV's

Gas cylinders for heaters can usually be recycled by returning them to the shop where you bought them.

Small electrical items (including mobile phones) can be disposed of at one of our WEEE banks around the borough.
