What goes in general waste

Your general household rubbish should be put in your refuse bin or black bag.

We only collect household rubbish that cannot be recycled using our recycling services such as the blue bin or box, recycling sack or communal recycling facilities.

Things to put in your refuse bin

  • plastic wrapping
  • sweet wrappers and crisp packets
  • polystyrene packaging
  • food (unless you receive a food and garden waste collection)

If you have a balcony or outdoor space at home, you may wish to consider composting food and garden waste into soil improver with a wormery.

All broken glass that is placed inside your refuse bin must be wrapped in cardboard or another ridged material so that it cannot pierce the bag and cause harm.

What can't go in your refuse bin

We also provide a weekly garden waste service for those living in flats or on estates.

Too much rubbish

If you're producing more rubbish than you can store in your bin, see our advice on reducing your waste

If you're still having problems with how much waste you're producing, contact us for more advice. In some cases, such as large families with young children, we may be able to arrange for a bigger bin.
